Review of the Orb at Trinity, 19 July 2008, by Emma Harvey
Wikipedia says; "The Orb often played to the needs of the chemical generation ravers of the 1980s and 1990s".
But, place them in front of the legal highs and early-to-bed Naughties generation and we see how all the sterilization of our era just can't beat the retro-electro spirit of this sneaky live set.
I love a front man that can command the crowd and D'eric Von Bat does just that. Dressed from head to toe in white, 'The Corprol' becomes part of the backdrop for a psychedelic mix-mash of projected images to create a visual spectacle that didn't disappoint.
Fil Le Gonidread's echoing synths combined with classic Alex Paterson on decks and samples was enough to get the crowd all frantic and frenzied. Everyone was moving in what became a steamy strobing sauna, reminiscent of a Trinity past. Are the 90s retro? I ask myself, as I'm punching the air in time to Keith York's throbbing live drum beat.
Either way, I'm compelled to use words like 'mega' and 'pumpin'. Or any 90s slang where you drop the 'g'...
